The Dallas Police Department has classified an aggravated robbery that occurred in Oak Lawn last week as an anti-gay hate crime, DPD Sr. Cpl. Janice Crowther said Monday, July 21.

The robbery occurred at about midnight Wednesday, July 16 on Dickason Avenue between Throckmorton and Reagan streets. The victim, Jimmy Lee Dean, was severely beaten by two suspects who reportedly yelled anti-gay epithets prior to and during the attack.

The suspects later told police they decided to rob Dean because he was gay and would make an easier target, Crowther said.

Dean remains in intensive care at Parkland Hospital, one longtime friend said Monday, and is expected to recover from his injuries. Crowther said DPD investigators were able to interview Dean before classifying the case as a hate crime.

The two suspects remain in jail charged with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony punishable by five years to life in prison. Bobby Jack Singleton, 26, and Jonathan Gunter, 31, both of Garland, are being held on $300,000 bond each.
